How to Draw A Cartoon

Step 1

Starting in the middle of the paper, draw an irregular vertical oval shape with a wider bottom.

To ensure the cartoon is drawn in the centre, you can create reference lines by drawing an intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.

The point where the two lines meet should be in the centre of your cartoon’s face. Use the lines as a guide.

Draw an ear on each side of your cartoon’s head. As can be seen in the figure, the tops of the ears we drew are relatively larger than the bottoms.

Ensure the ears on both sides of the cartoon’s face are drawn evenly and at the same height. This will help make your drawing proportionate.

Under the cartoon’s head, draw two diagonal lines pointing down, facing each other. This will create the head of your cartoon drawing.

The distance between the diagonal lines depends on how thick or thin you want the neck to appear. As a general rule, a one-inch gap should be sufficient.

In this step, we will create the shirt collar that will wear your cartoon. Start drawing an irregular V-shaped line at the bottom of the neck, with both ends going through the neck.

Next, draw two sidelines in a V shape on each side of the line we just drew. At this point, the entire collar should be complete.

Remember that the lines should be slightly curved, not straight, so the collar feels soft, like real fabric.

Draw the eyebrows just below the brow. Make sure you shade the entire brow shape!

Remember that men usually have fuller eyebrows than women, so keep that in mind when drawing your eyebrows.

And because we are creating a masculine character, we designed a pair of thick, curved, well-defined eyebrows.

Draw two connected curved lines that form the upper lip. Then connect both endpoints of each line with another curved line below, creating the bottom lip.

Now you want to add a line inside the lip outline to create the separation between the upper lip and lower lip.

In this step, we will also add the detail in both ears. Draw a curved line across the top of the ear, following the outline of the ears.

Then draw two more short curved lines to create the insides of the ears.

Step 8

Complete the look of your caricature by adding eyes. Under each eyebrow, draw downward curved lines forming the eyelid.

Then, draw a circular shape under each curved line to outline the iris. Next, draw a small circle in each iris of both eyes.

Now shade the entire iris, leaving out the small unshaded circle, for a dramatic “shimmery eye” effect.

Remember that a caricature is usually exaggerated, so feel free to highlight any facial features you want to emphasize.

Now that we’ve successfully drawn a cartoon, it’s time for the funnest part: choosing colours and colouring your drawing!

As you can see in the image, we used a custom skin colour for the skin of our caricature drawing.

Mix white, brown, red, and yellow to create a skin tone colour. You can add more of each colour depending on the complexion you want to achieve.

Remember that this colour is best achieved with a watercolour or other colouring material that mixes and blends easily.

Have fun playing with colours and see your caricature finally come to life!
